What is Reiki?
Reiki is a healing modality that originated in Japan, built upon the many millennia of eastern medical modalities such as Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine which know that “chi” energy runs through the human system. In Reiki, the “ki” (pronounced “key”) is the Universal Love energy that runs through the entire system we’re embedded within. A Reiki practitioner is taught to channel this energy from the universe through their hands to a willing recipient.
The originator of Reiki was a Japanese monk who was advanced in the Martial Arts (where many disciplines know “chi”/”ki” to be real, such as Taichi, Aikido, and the like) and uncovered the Reiki energy through his exploration of healing modalities. As I understand it, Dr. Mikao Usui restored our human ability to tap into the Universal Love field through conscious intention as well as attunement to symbols. These elements — visual symbols and focused intentions — are known through the ages to have true power.
In America today, Reiki is traceable through both American and Japanese lineages. While certain practices fluctuate, the ultimate nature and intent of the therapy is consistent. To my mind, the 5 Precepts for the Reiki practitioner illustrate the core righteousness of this therapeutic method:
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing.
Aren’t those intents meaningful value statements expressing how to live a good life and feel happiness?
In terms of how Reiki is experienced, you will lie face up on a flat surface, if this position is available to you (otherwise, you’ll sit up). Lizz will channel Reiki and set healing intentions and assess your body for needs. Then Lizz will set her hands on your clothed body in various positions. After a number of positions, you will turn over onto your stomach, if this position is available to you (otherwise you’ll sit up on a stool), and Lizz will place her hands in additional positions. At the end, we’ll sweep away any excess energy and check in with ourselves.
Possible Benefits
Reiki has been associated with a wide variety of health benefits. Also note, Reiki literally cannot do harm. Each certified Reiki practitioner is bound towards healing intent — only healing Ki is channeled and passed to the recipient, and your body is always free to take or leave the energy offered.
After a Reiki session with Lizz, ideally, you will experience some of the following outcomes:
- Less pain in affected areas
- Sense of calmness
- Improved emotional balance
- Increase in joint mobility
