What is Sound Therapy?
Sound Therapy involves delivering sound vibrations to the human body and energy field, known as the biofield, to improve our functioning. Each sound carries a frequency signature. Different instruments make different sounds. Over the many millennia that people have been experimenting with sound, we’ve learned to identify harmonic waveforms through our ears and our bodies. Although our understanding of musical scales and harmonious keys are culturally conditioned, we still find that various sets of sounds resonate in space ideally for the human body and mind.
Drumming is the original therapeutic instrument — people have been drumming since we had hands and minds. Shamans know that the rhythm of drums pulls the mind into its rhythm, shifting people out of habitual thought patterns and into fresh and vital patterns — a pattern that can be as simple and timeless as a heartbeat.
Typically, Sound Therapy involves playing some of the following instruments:
- Tuning forks
- Crystal singing bowls
- Gong
- Handpan
- Drums
- Ocean drum
- Koshi chimes
- Rattles
- Bells
- Voice
And honestly, that’s just a start of the possible instruments involved in a Sound Bath! In terms of how it’s experienced, you find a comfortable position to relax, rest, and allow your body and mind to sink into the session. A lying-down position with some pillows and bolsters for support as well as a blanket and eye mask for comfort are recommended.
Some healing instruments are moved around in space, while others will be fixed in position. Some interesting brain vibrations happen with something called a binaural beat. To create a binaural beat, I play one sound in one of your ears and a similar but different sound in your other ear; your brain waves enter entrainment with the very small difference in frequency between the two beats, allowing you to naturally enter a theta wave brain state. The theta brain state is associated with relaxed flow and creativity, and is the state of mind reached by advanced meditation practitioners.
Sound Balancing using tuning forks is particularly focused and powerful modality of Sound Therapy. I have received training in the methods developed by Eileen McKusick of Biofield Tuning fame. In this practice, tuning forks are first used to activate the body, and then resolve density in the biofield through entrainment and resonance. This modality is a remarkably effectively way to induce greater relaxation and reduce stress, achieving a state which allows the body to find greater degrees of freedom and promotes self-healing.

Each sound carries a frequency signature. Different instruments make different sounds. Over the many millennia that people have been experimenting with sound, we’ve learned to identify harmonic waveforms through our ears and our bodies. Although our understanding of musical scales and keys are culturally conditioned, we can use many types of sounds which beat and resonate in order to deliver benefits for the human mind and body.
